Supporting the environment
Rtn. Abhijit Deshpande (AB)
The COVID-19 scenario has made us more conscious than ever about our health, our environment and the general well being of mother earth. It was a wakeup call for all of us that if we do not care for our planet, it is going to hit us back without mercy.
Rotary has always been in the forefront of the movement to create a greener planet. More than $18 million in Foundation global grant funding has been allocated to environment-related projects over the past five years.
Keeping in line with its commitment towards this cause, Rotary Foundation Trustees and Rotary International Board of Directors have both unanimously approved adding a seventh area of focus: Supporting the environment.
This new focus area will provide us an opportunity to execute specific targeted projects for the environment. Global grants can also be sought for the projects, thus increasing their impact.
Our Rotary Club of Pune South has always been an ardent supporter of the environmental cause. We started the current Rotary year with a big bang with our Environment Protection & Awareness Committee conducting our yearly sapling and seedling plantation porgram. Even COVID-19 could not dampen the spirit of our Southern Stars.

Rotary Photo Contest
The Rotarians international photo contest received more than 600 entries from 56 countries and geographical areas. The photographs take us from the vast plains of Inner Mongolia to the manmade canyons of Hong Kong. There was an entry from Shravan BM of The Rotary Club of Bantwal Loretto Hills, India that received an honourable mention. This contest is held for Rotarians every year.
Let us aim that talented photographers from our club will also send an entry this year.
Rotary Designated Month

August - Membership & New Club Development Month
Are we in the unlocking phase or the lockdown phase or the unlocked lockdown phase or the locked unlocking phase... oh there is so much confusion...!
But there is no confusion in Rotary and Rotarians. No matter what, we are always aware of our sense of duty towards our club and effectively towards society. To involve more and more people from the society in this service spirit of Rotary, the month of August is designated as Membership & New Club Development Month.
RI President Holger Knaack has also said that his first priority during this year as RI President will be "to grow Rotary at all levels. Membership is our first internal priority while polio is our external priority". His other top priorities would be getting more young professionals and women who occupy leadership positions into Rotary.
As you know our RCPS Strategic Planning Committee has set targets to be achieved till the 53rd year of our club i.e. 2023. The targets set until the 53rd year are:
• 100 % retention of the existing members
• 20 by 53 - 20 new members of age between 35 to 55
• 25 by 53 - 25% lady Rotarians
• 10 by 53 - Min. 10% net gain per year
• 5 by 53 - bring down average club age by 5 yrs.
Some of the things we can do to help achieve these targets are:
• Update our classifications list and circulate amongst members and accordingly fill-up the vacancies.
• Educate members about membership procedures.
• Invite Rotaractors to join Rotary.
• Use our online meetings and social profiles to promote Rotary membership.
• Organise seminars inviting non-rotary friends and involving Rotary Alumni to emphasize the advantages of joining Rotary.
We all need to put in our wholehearted efforts to achieve these targets. I am sure we will all do it and I will have good things to write about it in the next month.
