Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month
Rtn. Abhijit Deshpande (AB)
February is a very important month for Rotary. It was on the 23rd February 1905, that Rotary is founded at Unity Building, Chicago, Illinois, United States of America.
As a humanitarian organisation, peace is a cornerstone of Rotary's mission and as such, the month of February is celebrated as Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month.
Millions of people all over the world are currently displaced by armed conflict or persecution. Most of the casualties in any conflict are civilians. Women and children are the worst affected.
Through service projects and Rotary programs, Rotary is committed to pursuing projects that address the structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
An interesting initiative as part of this mission for better cultural and ethnic understanding and tolerance is the 'Rotaract Model United Nations Mission.'
'Rotaract MUN' is an annual international Model United Nations conference for youth participants from all over the world. Originally founded by the Rotaract Club of Baia Mare in Romania, each edition of 'Rotaract MUN' takes place in a different country and is organised by a different Rotaract Club (Rotary in Action Programme).
Since 2013, editions of 'Rotaract MUN have been held in Romania, United Kingdom, Serbia, USA (at the UN HQ), Bulgaria, Lebanon and India.
What a novel and innovative approach involving youth - the future citizens and decision-makers - in fostering a peaceful and understanding global community.
Rotary's New Vision Statement and Action Plan

Rotary's Board of Directors and Trustees have approved a new vision statement that will. help set a future course for Rotary to thrive in the years ahead.
This vision statement was created by using the input and feedback from Rotary members, former members, Rotaractors, alumni, Youth Exchange students, Rotary staff, and the general public. In all, over one million people across the world were asked to share their insights with the Strategic Planning Committee through surveys and focus groups. The result is a statement that inspires and engages while setting the pathway for the future of our organization. The vision was approved by the Rotary Board of Directors and Board of Trustees in June 2017.
Shortly after the vision statement was adopted, the Committee began developing Rotary’s new Action Plan. Again, the Committee invited reactions and input from Rotary members; over 582 people from 28 different countries participated in focus groups and interviews to provide feedback. In June 2018, both boards approved the strategic priorities and objectives that make up the new Action Plan.
